Workshop with Barbara Weeks
Children 8-12 years
Dates: Wednesday 9 July
Time: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Step into an underwater world of imagination in this magical felting workshop with textile artist Barbara Weeks.
Through the idea of an ocean adventure cruise and a “portal window” into the sea, children will be guided to imagine and create their own vibrant underwater universe — filled with fantasy fish, glowing coral, drifting seaweed, tiny turtles and singing seahorses.
Using soft merino wool and shimmering silk fibres, participants will explore colour, texture and layering to build a rich ocean scene on a felted background. With Barbara’s gentle guidance, children will then cut and collage their own sea creatures using pre-felt materials, bringing their underwater stories to life.
The session blends creativity, storytelling and tactile making, encouraging children to experiment freely and enjoy the calming rhythm of fibre art.
Throughout the workshop, they will explore:
• Building texture and depth using soft merino wool
• Layering silk fibres to create movement and shimmer
• Cutting and collaging pre-felt shapes to form sea creatures
• Developing imaginative storytelling through textile art
• Creating a complete underwater scene full of colour and personality
The focus is on creative exploration, sensory play and imaginative world-building through wool and fibre.
Each child will take home their own unique felted ocean artwork — a window into their own underwater story.
Magic element:
The “glue” is simply soapy water — a little science, a little movement, and a lot of magic as fibres naturally bond together.
Fun fact:
Australian Merino wool is among the finest in the world. No sheep are harmed in shearing — it’s simply their winter coat being removed.
