Sunflowers in Clay with Kay Manolas
Dates: Friday 11th & 18th July
Time: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
Who: Kids 6-11
Celebrate the joy of summer’s brightest bloom — even in the middle of winter! In this cheerful clay workshop, children will create their very own sunflower-inspired tiles with local ceramic artist Kay Manolas. Using soft stoneware clay, kids will explore how to shape, roll, press, and decorate clay while discovering the magic of texture and pattern.
The session begins with each child learning how to roll out a slab of clay — much like rolling dough — and then drawing and forming their sunflower shapes using hand tools and natural objects like leaves, seed pods, and flowers. With Kay’s warm guidance, they’ll explore:
The focus is on creative play and tactile discovery — children are encouraged to experiment, explore, and enjoy the process of working with clay in a relaxed, nurturing environment. Each child will leave with a beautiful sunflower tile that reflects their own artistic vision.
Firing Option:
Tiles can be taken home unfired on the day, or left with us for professional kiln firing. Please allow one week for drying and firing. Finished tiles can be collected from Commonage Pottery or posted to your home for an additional fee.
This workshop is perfect for children who love to get their hands moving, explore nature through art, and create something beautiful from the earth.
