A classic grape variety from Bordeaux, in fact the most widely planted in Bordeaux and also at Three Hills. The variety performs very well in Karridale. It produces rich gutsy reds with plenty of flavour and in a good year is generous in its yield.
In cool springs when the shoots are slow to establish some of the berries do not set seeds due to carbohydrate starvation at flowering when there is severe competition for shoot, leaf and root growth. This seems to affect us about one year in four. Budburst tends to be irregular with many blind buds in the middle of the canes. We combat this by keeping the four canes on each vine to just eight buds.
The displays intense sweet fruit with flavours of raspberry, green cherry, and plum skin with hints of choc mint, capsicum and black berry. The palate is soft and chalky with good persistence and we think perfect for day to day drinking.
