FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING WITH ANNIE WINCHCOMBE

I’m really excited to offer a drawing course for EITHER complete beginners OR to anyone that wants to brush up on their skills, while exploring their creative self and connecting with other fabulous people. There will be no pressure or judgement, you don’t need to have developed skills or talent to find success! Drawing is a completely teachable skill!

Week 1. Perception and fundamental skills
What is a drawing? Consider drawing as a way of seeing the world, a relationship between line, shape, value, texture, space, and colour. You are using a visual language to express an idea, and to do this you need a shift in understanding and a set of skills that enable you to capture this idea. Discover and practise these skills in this first lesson.

Week 2. Mark making and understanding line and shape
Take a line for a walk, discover 6 ways of approaching line and 3 types of shape that will help you capture an idea on paper. Alter your perception and discover the difference between process and outcome.

Week 3. Shading and contours
Learn ways of expressing yourself using mark making and drawing as a tool. Discover the several techniques of shading, your pencil hold, contour lines and the importance of value (light/dark) in a drawing.

Week 4. Perceiving space – Positive/ Negative
Discover the importance of negative space and see how it is of equal value to positive space when you are mapping your initial drawing. Learn how to find an edge and identify negative space as a shape.

Week 5. Perspective
Understand and apply the basic principles of one-, two- and three-point perspective. First you must learn this, internalise it and then forget it. Discover what foreshortening is, and 10 perspective hacks that will help you create depth of field in your drawings.

Week 6. Seeing Light – Value
Discover that drawing form is only an illusion. Learn the principles of using a grey scale to create value and using contrast as a way to enliven your drawings, making them more dynamic.

About Annie Winch Art

My work is a heartfelt response to the environment around me. I am continually drawn to the natural world; the oceans, forests, landscape and plants. I like the complexity of layers and mark-making, and so strive to create interesting, suggestive surfaces that reflect this interconnectedness. I have been influenced by the exploration of natural pattern, colour, collage and stitch, including Australian Indigenous stories and marks. My work evolves through process rather than planning, where I explore mixed media, paint and stitch, allowing the mediums and tools to inform my process. My intent is to create artwork that evokes beauty in colour and marks, so the viewer may experience my connection to the natural world.
