Overview:

Join us for an immersive five-day workshop on Glaze Development and Ceramic Firing Techniques conducted by established ceramic artists Gary Hambleton and Japneet Keith. This workshop is designed for both beginners and professionals who want to deepen their understanding of glazes and ceramics. Through hands-on activities and expert guidance, participants will explore the fascinating world of glaze chemistry and firing processes.

 Session Dates: October 16th- 20th

Level: Suitable for beginners to professionals.

Timings:

Each day will start at 10:00 am and conclude around 4:00 pm. The day will be split into two sessions. Please note that the end time may vary slightly depending on the day's activities.

Morning Session 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Afternoon Session 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

The workshop is intense and by the end of five days, participants learn how to develop glazes from a pallet they might like. Since each participant works on a set of glazes, we end up with close to 500 glaze test tiles.

Brief Outline:

Day 1: Developing base glazes & application.

Day 2: Reduction firing and understanding minerals. Substitution, and additions of minerals & triaxial.

Day 3: Understanding the results and developing line blends, triaxial and over underglaze pallet with 144 tiles.

Day 4: Firing another round of glaze test tiles.

Day 5: Unloading and outlining all glaze test tiles. It is a very crucial event, make sure you observe each test tile and document.

About the Instructors:

Gary Hambleton: An experienced Australian ceramic artist known for his stunning rutile blues and reds achieved through reduction firing. With over four decades of experience, Gary has worked in prestigious potteries, owned his own studio, and conducted workshops in India and Australia.

 

Japneet Keith: An industrial designer specializing in ceramics and glass. She founded 'Red Mug,' a clay studio in Chandigarh India and has been instrumental in building a repertoire of artist at Commonage Pottery. She has extensive international training in ceramics and design.

Both Gary & Japneet have been conducting the Glaze development workshops since 2015, in institutes and private ceramic institutions/studios.

Workshop Methodology:

Participants will engage in hands-on learning, experimenting with 30 base glazes.

Activities include triaxial blends, line blends, over and underglaze palettes, mineral substitutions, and additions.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed their own glaze palette and executed numerous experiments, resulting in close to 500 glaze test tiles.

Materials and Takeaways:

Participants will have the opportunity to glaze their own 16 test tiles and one ceramic bowl.

The workshop fee includes all materials, test tiles, and two firings.

Participants are encouraged to bring 16 test tiles and stoneware clay (bisque fired, dimensions 5cm - 10cm).
