It may be difficult to believe but sweet wines used to rule the wine world. From the enchanting wines of Tokjai and the delicate purity of Mosel Rieslings, to the unctuous wines of Sauternes; sweet wines were the most highly prized and revered across the globe. Advances in technology since the 1970’s have seen a global swing away from sweet wines in favour of dry. To make matters worse, a sense of snobbery against sweet wines has become prevalent in the Australian wine industry, with the ‘experts’ implying that sweeter styles are for the undeveloped palate.
Luckily for the vast number of sweet wine lovers out there, many producers still dedicate themselves to making an incredible array of quality sweet wines. For those willing to explore and experiment – there is a myriad of delicious, versatile and amazing wines to discover.
Join us on the 20th and 21st of October this year at Happs Wines in Margaret River for a celebration of sweet wines. Let’s stage a revolution against sweet wine snobbery! On the Saturday we’ll be hosting a people’s choice tasting of over 20 categories with wines from all over Australia. The Sunday program will offer a range of masterclasses and a decadent sweet wine paired long-table lunch.
